WHY UGANDA

Northern Uganda is in the region of the world where there is a high disease burden. Rates of Malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV / AIDS are amongst the highest in the world. YOTKOM is an ACHOLI word meaning "HEALTH" (local spoken language) "Partnering to enhance holistic healthcare access and quality in Northern Uganda by building relationships, optimizing resources, and promoting self-reliance." At Yotkom, we uphold our values of faith, love, respect, truth, and excellence in our relationships with each other, our patients, and the Acholi community.

Relationships

We prioritize love, honesty, and respect, focusing on understanding and listening to one another, especially given our diverse cultural backgrounds. Building strong, supportive relationships is essential to our mission.

Resources

We are building the necessary capital and human resources to provide excellent healthcare in rural Northern Uganda. Support from donors and partners is crucial for acquiring land, facilities, and medical equipment, as well as for sustaining our skilled Ugandan team.

Self-Reliance

We aim for Ugandan leaders to drive the project, with overseas partners providing support and resources. Our goal is to achieve long-term sustainability through local income generation and a fee-for-service model, targeting at least 75% financial self-reliance in Uganda.

OUR JOURNEY

Dr. Andrew and Anne Wright, Australian founding directors of Yotkom Uganda, have drawn deep motivation and purpose from their Christian faith. Particularly in following the teachings of Jesus Christ and being his disciple in the world as outlined in the Bible: the guidebook for the Christian community. In 2001, feeling called to medical mission work, they visited the Kitgum District of Northern Uganda, witnessing the community's suffering from civil war, disease, and a lack of trained medical staff. Over the years, they built trusting relationships with local health professionals and leaders, leading to the formal establishment of Yotkom in 2008, a non-government organization aimed at improving healthcare access in Northern Uganda. With generous support from Australian donors, the Yotkom Medical Centre opened in October 2015. In recognition of their significant contributions, Andrew and Anne received the Order of Australia (AM) in 2017.
